Affirming Neurodivergence – Strategies for celebrating and supporting neurodiversity in early childhood services
*** IN PERSON ***
Early Supports for Infants & Toddlers
Details
This workshop is *** IN PERSON ***. location will be shared with participants two weeks before the event.
Affirming, welcoming, and supporting neurodiversity is an important part of inclusion. Neurodiversity is all around us, among children and adults. As early childhood professionals committed to inclusion, it is vital that we learn to create conditions for neurodivergent children to feel seen, supported, connected, and proud: seen for the strengths and gifts they bring, supported by the people around them, connected through loving and respectful relationships, and proud of who they are and the community they belong to. Autistic and other neurodivergent children deserve to grow up learning about themselves, free from pressure to mask or camouflage, accepted and celebrated as they are.
In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the neurodiversity paradigm and the ways neurodiversity shows up in early childhood. This will be a beginner-friendly space that welcomes all levels of skill and experience supporting neurodivergent children and their families. We’ll explore the intersections of neurodiversity, race, and gender. We’ll reflect on our own neurotypes, learn about access needs, and practice inclusive strategies for supporting and affirming neurodivergent children and their families.
