Trauma and The Social Roots of Migration
Implications for a liberation-based practice with the Central American Community
Details
Workforce Development invites you to join us on a new Community of Practice that will take place from November 2023 to March 2024. If you participated in our Platica: Community Building for Healing workshop (not a requirement), we highly encourage you to consider joining this opportunity to build on that knowledge through conversation with Dr. Ivania Delgado.
Trauma and The Social Roots of Migration: Implications for a liberation-based practice with the Central American Community
Together, we will delve into the historical, political, and economic factors contributing to migration, unraveling their profound influences within our communities. We will deepen our understanding of how these forces shape migration patterns by analyzing the connections between colonialism, neocolonialism, and social inequalities. Through the lens of liberation psychology, we will navigate the complexities of migration, examining the factors that impact the well-being, social integration, and overall adjustment of migrants while maintaining a trauma-informed approach.
Our exploration will also encompass the profound impact of historical trauma, allowing us to support and empower those we serve. With a focus on intersectionality, we will explore the intersecting identities of Central American people and the layers of oppression they face, equipping ourselves with the understanding and self-awareness needed to provide inclusive, historically responsive, and culturally sensitive support.
Additionally, we will celebrate the resilience and the concept of post-traumatic growth and recognize the collective strength within these communities. In this collaborative space, we will challenge anti-immigrant sentiments by naming power structures and reflecting on our power to disrupt the status quo.
Applications will close on November 15th, 2023.
If the application is received after November 10th, please note that interpretation support cannot be guaranteed for the first scheduled session but will be secured for the remainder of the scheduled dates.
