Community Building for Healing is a fluid conversation that will dive into difficult and uncomfortable histories. We will co-create an online learning space that will bravely name and discuss the colonial roots of historical trauma and how colonialism continues to exist and oppress people today. Together we will define and examine narratives that perpetuate stereotypes and result in micro-aggressions that reinforce existing ruptures between communities. Even though we will review commonly studied trauma information that helpers may already use in their trauma-informed work with the communities they serve, this conversation will center on Central America's diverse, powerful, and ingenious peoples.

Together, we will accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Learn about colonial historical trauma centering on the Central American community through a lens of intersectionality.
  2. Discuss the roots of migration, including concepts of colonialism, poverty, racism, and oppression.
  3. Be able to describe intergenerational trauma.
  4. Identify and examine deficit narratives of people's culture and behaviors rooted in institutional racism and oppression.
  5. Define and explore manifestations of internalized oppression while interrogating power.
  6. Learn about cultural humility, trauma-informed communication styles, and community-based pathways to healing.

This workshop is a 2- Part series.
